MaryAnne is suffering from cancer and direly needs our help to start Chemotherapy treatment. The father narrates how he sold all his livestock in an effort to help her dear daughter get medical treatment. After she was diagnosed with cancer, he went further and sold his piece of land.

Meet John Shikuku from Kiminini, Kitale Trans Nzoia County. He has been sick for quite sometime now. John suffers from growths which has popped all over his skin. He has one big growth on his back which is very heavy and another one near the face which makes one eye to sag. Due to his condition John has suffered from stigma and no one wants to associate with him. People usualy refuse to employ him because of his skin condition.

It’s been very hard for him to get a job and when he gets it’s only manual jobs where he getsless than 100 Bob daily. John tells me that few years ago he had been employed in a homestead as shamba boy where he worked for 7 years without being paid even a penny. The owner of that place threatened to kill him and his family if they didn’t leave. John left with his family at night and that day they slept on the road since they had no place to go.

Ruth (John’s wife) says that she loves him and she is ready to support him. She says that John works very hard to provide food and school fees for the family. This couple inspires me because they say for better for worse, she will always love him. Ruth worries that this diseases is affecting her son. The son has small growths similar to those of his father’s.

John can’t afford to get even transport to go for medical check up. He is from a poor family and his father died in 2019. He was left with his mother who is old and has nothing to support him.

“Afadhali nikuwe na afya njema na nikuwe maskini”, John said these words to me and I was touched. I reflected on what John said to me and I thank God for the gift of good health.

Leah Mumbi is a middle-aged woman from Kimilili, Bungoma County, Kenya. Leah has large sores on her face due to an undiagnosed condition. She narrates that the illness began as just small rashes. The rashes were only appearing on her face, so she didn’t consider it to be serious at first.

The mother of 4 grabbed some off-the-shelf transdermal medicines and used them to apply on her skin, hoping the rashes would disappear. On the contrary, they only grew larger.

Desperate, panicked and scared, Leah decided to try a different remedy. Since she couldn’t afford specialist consultation, this time, she went for herbal medicines but to no success. The condition became much more dreadful, with the rashes opening up into sores.

Within a short time, other symptoms began to appear such as severe headaches and chest pains. She was forced to quit her daily casual work and nurse her injuries back at home. In her 10 sq. feet brick house, with dangerous cracks and a roof that doesn’t hold, she lay helpless.

Questions without answers led to stress, and she would soon develop stomach ulcers – soil in a pile of mud, making the situation even worse. Leah tells us that she now has continous stomach upsets, and her joints feel like they’re being torched from the inside out. So bad that she can hardly turn in bed.

Food is a problem. Leah has nobody to fend for her. She eats at the mercy of neighbours and people of good-will. As if this is not enough, Leah has shed almost all of her teeth in an unusual way due to this illness. She can barely eat, which makes the ulcers more deadly.

Her 4 kids quit school due to a lack of school fees, some of them resorting to get married and others fleeing in search of jobs to try and help their sick mother. Immediate relatives cannot render Leah any help, as they too are going through their fair share of financial struggles. Both her parents passed on.

Leah’s typical day is lying helpless in her house, praying, hoping that someday someone will come and rescue her before it’s too late. Due to the sores, she cannot get outside in the sun or sit close to fire. She wraps up in some old tattered sheets to keep warm.

The society has ruled out that she was bewitched, and that she can only wait on her death. The very extreme of saddists laugh at her and speculate how she’s going to die. This is the present situation.

Now that we’re here, we want to appeal to people of good-will to join us in rescuing Leah. She’s had enough of pain and isolation. Please help us by donating any amount towards her treatment and welfare. Leah is a strong woman for sure, but she needs our help urgently.

This week we are highlighting a story from North Mugirango, Kisii County. Meet Jane Moraa, a fairly aged woman who struggles with a protruding growth on the left side of her back.

For quite some time now, Jane has been forced to bear the pain and suffering caused to her by the growth. Due to a lack of funds, she’s unable to get good medical care. She relies on painkillers to subdue her constant pain and discomfort.

The growth sometimes discharges pus, which produces a bad odour. This makes her tend to isolate herself and avoid getting in contact with people. Due to the growth, she is continually becoming weak and unable to go about her routine work. The jovial lady is a widow and she’s deaf.

Her family has tried their best to set her up at a local clinic for pain medication, but that’s just as far as they can afford. Jane cannot get proper treatment at the clinic since there are no specialists.

Jane needs our help. We can join hands and help relieve the pain this mama is carrying on her back. Let’s do what we can. Remember, service to humanity is service to God.

In Kibera, Nairobi County, we meet Priscilla Ogema, a single mother of 3 kids.

The boy, Dominic, is suffering from a condition of body swelling. The swelling started on his head, spread to his chest and then to his left hand. The swelling has also affected his spinal cord. Priscilla’s in-laws took her as a bad omen in the family, and advised their son (her husband) to marry another woman who would have healthy kids. Out of frustration, she had to go back home to her parents with the kids.

After her mother died, she came to Kibera with her kids to look for any job she could do to cater for them. She used to leave Dominic inside the house and attempt to look for a job. Unfortunately, Priscilla would later develop a health condition that restrained her from doing difficult jobs. Sometimes she lacks the strength to go to work, and the children are forced to sleep hungry. Priscilla has other children who look up to her for their school fees and food. She has not paid her rent for 5 months now, and the landlord previously kicked her out with her kids, demanding full payment. She sought refuge at her brother’s, which is where they stay now.

Due to poor sanitation in the informal settlements, they have to pay for public toilets every day. Dominic can’t use the public toilets outside, so Priscilla has to buy him diapers on a daily basis – mounting further burden for money.

Priscilla is seen as an outcast because of giving birth to such a child. The child can’t socialize or behave normally like other kids. If he tries to join other children in play, they mock and make fun of him. This has affected his self-esteem, so he opts to stay indoors rather than go outside. He feels bad because of the hurtful words he hears from people. Due to a lack of funds, Priscilla is unable to take the boy to get proper treatment.

It’s quite sad that not once or twice, Priscilla has tried to commit suicide together with her kids. On all accounts, she reached a point where she lost hope of things getting better and that’s why she felt the need to commit suicide.

She’s pleading for help for her son to get treatment. We can help Dominic get proper diagnosis and treatment, if we join hands.

In Makueni County, Sultan Hamud, we arrive at Mbitini, where we meet Alice Maundu, a mother of 9 kids. We are here to highlight the story of her son, Amos Maundu, who is suffering from umblical hernia. Amos is a form three student, but is not attending school at the moment due to the illness. Sometimes he wears extra clothes to hide the hernia just to avoid people laughing at him or mocking him. When he’s alone, he cries out asking God where he went wrong to suffer like this.

Alice once took him to Kenyatta Hospital where he had surgery, but after some time, it came back. She does casual jobs for a living. The little amount she gets sometimes is not even enough for their daily meal. The mother divides her daily wage, buying a little food for the family and some medicine for her ill son, Amos. Due to a lack of funds, Amos is not able to get proper treatment. Now he depends on painkillers to relieve his pain.

Sleepless nights are the order of the day for this young boy. While in school, some kids used to insult him, saying he was pregnant; others said he had a big stomach. Such painful words would hurt him, knowing it’s not his will to get sick. Other members of the community say that the mother bewitched her son. Sometimes Amos feels like he should commit suicide and leave this earth. It’s very painful to see that he can’t do anything, and due to that stigma, it has affected his self-esteem. At school, he has an outstanding fee debt of KES 14,000 which his family is unable to raise.

One amazing thing about Amos is that he volunteered himself to be a Sunday school teacher, despite his present condition. He trains young kids in church. He has that passion for doing God’s work. Regardless of everything, he loves serving God, and this gives him hope that one day he will heal because of doing God’s will.

This young man is very intelligent and sharp. He says if he gets a chance to go back to school, he would be very happy, but they lack funds. Let’s support this young man and help him achieve his dreams. We can do this together. Let’s show some love to this young man and his family. He needs to undergo surgery to have the hernia removed.

Meet Diana, from Pipeline in Embakasi, who is suffering from injuries after she was brutally beaten by unknown people. Diana had gone out to buy something for dinner when, from what she remembers, someone called her and later she found herself bleeding in pain in a bush.

Diana was stabbed with a sharp knife, hit with a metallic rod, and left in a bush to die. Luckily, some pedestrians saw her and tried to help her out. She was severely bleeding and her teeth were falling off due to how badly she had been beaten. She was weak and couldn’t walk. Her mom was called, and she went to help her.

Diana also has a little girl who is not doing well mentally. She was born with a hyper condition. After some time, she developed some skin problems due to the medicine her mom applied to her. This again became another problem for her. Diana didn’t have a stable job, and then this brutality happened to her.

It’s sad to see Diana suffering in pain caused by people because of the 30K she had for a chama (welfare group). This family is passing through a lot of challenges. They depend on well-wishers to provide them with something to eat, and when they lack, they sleep hungry.

Patricia Munyiva is a Makueni County resident from the Mbooni East sub-county. She’s suffering from a growth in her right eye. The growth started years back as an eye problem. The eye became itchy and started to swell, and it was painful. The swelling became worse, later resulting in the growth. At that time, she went to the hospital and had surgery, unfortunately losing her eye. Because they came from a low-income family, they had sold everything to pay for her treatment.

After some time, the growth started to form again. It’s painful and causes her to have sleepless nights. Due to a lack of funds, Patricia is forced to live with only painkillers to relieve the pain. Seeing that they had sold everything they had in exchange for her treatment, she lost hope of getting better.

Patricia has no stable job. She only does farm work. Sometimes she can’t even handle doing house chores due to the pain. She lives with her husband, who also has no energy to do hard work. With the little money he gets, he buys painkillers for his wife.

Patricia is pleading for help. She isolates herself from people, dreading insults and stigma towards her. Some say that she was bewitched. This makes her feel like an outcast. She needs to have surgery. Let’s support Patricia and get her medical care. Let’s show some love to this lady. She’s a very jovial woman, but the illness has affected her quality of life.

In Nyamira County, Gesima ward, Bunjumba, we meet Joel Anyona Karara, who’s suffering from a growth on the left side of his face. The growth started some years back as a pimple, which has currently gone from bad to worse. After the first signs, he sold some of his household items and went to the hospital. He was lucky enough to be treated, and he recovered.

After a year, the growth started again. It became so bad that it covered the whole left side of his face. Joel, the breadwinner of the family, had to remain at home since he couldn’t work due to the illness. He was so stressed and couldn’t figure out how to raise any money for his treatment. Even transport to get to a clinic was a problem. Pain and sorrow became part of him to the point where he lost hope of getting better. He and his family sold all the livestock they had to try and raise the money for surgery, but to no avail.

The wife took the role of being the breadwinner and supported her husband in everything he needed. Despite the challenges of having a sick person in the house, she did all she could to stand with her family. The firstborn son was forced to stop schooling due to a lack of school fees. He came home to hustle and search for a job he could do to support the family. They did menial jobs and put in their all, but the money was still not enough for Joel’s treatment. The family has experienced rejection and isolation from people due to this illness. Even their relatives got tired of helping them out. They depend on well-wishers to help them, even for food sometimes. Not once or twice have they slept hungry because of a lack of food.

This family has been through a lot. Joel needed to have surgery, but due to a lack of funds, he’s left with taking painkillers. He isolates himself from people to avoid contact with them. Their wish as a family is that Joel gets the finances and starts his treatment.

We can help this family and change their story. Let’s show them some love and that we care. We can help Joel get his treatment. Remember, service to humanity is service to God.

Nyongesa Oluoch has a growth just above his left eye. About 2 years ago, he was advised to do an MRI test but couldn’t afford the cost.

Nyongesa stopped working due to the illness and the family has no financial means to take him to hospital.

Meet Priscilla Wanjiru, a 30-year old lady from Kajiado county. She’s suffering from a swollen leg. The problem started 15 years ago when the leg became itchy and she complained of having leg pains. After some time, the leg started to swell. It became worse to the extent that she couldn’t walk well. Sometimes the leg removes pus and it becomes smelly. She gets sleepless nights because of the pain in her leg. Her parents tried to look for her treatment, but to no avail, due to a lack of funds.

Priscilla got married, and they were blessed with two kids. Unfortunately, the husband died due to a road accident last year in 2021, leaving her with two kids, aged 7 and 1 year old. The husband was the breadwinner for this family. He did everything and provided for the family. Because of this leg, she is unable to work.

Priscilla goes through a lot in her life. She faces rejection from people, and this leads her to isolate herself from people to avoid getting in contact with them. She and the kids often go to bed hungry due to a lack of food. She gives them plain water sometimes when she has no food to give them.

It’s such a challenge for Priscilla to provide for the kids’ basic needs. She even lacks a small amount of money to pay her son’s school fees, and the only option left is to stay with the kid at home. She loses hope and sometimes wishes to die. She has tried to take some suicidal medicines three times due to stress.

Buying painkillers for herself has become a problem. She sold her household items to cater to her kids and at least get something to buy medicine. Priscilla feels like a lesser woman, seeing that she’s unable to provide for her children.

This is Ruth Gesare from Nyamira county, West Migirango Constituency, Bosamaru Ward. The 28-year old lady was involved in a fire explosion from a cooking stove in 2011.

The explosion occurred around 9:00 PM when she was cooking her dinner. She tried to put off a fire from the stove but instead, it exploded and burnt her face severely – leaving her badly deformed. Her lower lip and neck got attached after the burn. As a result, she is not able to close her lower jaw.

After the accident, Ruth was unconscious for two weeks. She narrates that when she woke up and saw how her face was deformed, she fainted. To this day, Ruth has not recovered from the stigma. She isolates herself and avoids getting in contact with other people.

At the time of the unfortunate accident, Ruth was 6 months pregnant. When she woke up at the hospital bed, she found her mom beside her, but the husband had left and never came back.

She delivered the baby but after sometime the baby died. Ruth got married again but people in the new family rejected her. She was pregnant and was forced to go back home. Now she has a 2 days old baby.

Ruth has no one to take care of her and her baby. She lives on her own in an empty house with just a mattress. She depends on her neighbors and well wishers who offer food when they visit.

Most people see her as an outcast due to her present situation. Some say she stole someone’s husband that’s why she got burnt. Others run away from her when they see her. No one accepts to offer her a job. People do not understand that it was not her choice to get burnt, it was just an accident that happened.

She’s currently depressed and frustrated with life. Let’s purpose to help Ruth, she’s needed to undergo a facial reconstructive surgery to repair her deformed face.

Soweto, Kayole, Nairobi County – we meet Diana Otulo, a 12-year old girl. She’s suffering from a condition called Umblical Hernia. She has previously underwent 4 surgeries but the condition has never changed.

The illness started when she was about 8 years old. Her navel used to ache now and then but nobody knew what the problem was until the young girl’s belly started to swell and became large.

When she was taken to hospital the doctors recommended a surgery, but they found out her appendix had rotten inside her stomach. The swollen area held 1.5 litres of pus. They removed the pus and washed her intestines because they were infected.

Diana was discharged after the procedure, but after 4 months the swelling came back. Caroline her mom, took her back to hospital. This became a routine. Everytime a surgery was done, the condition would reoccur soon after.

To deal with the case fully, doctor’s now recommend that they perform another surgery and insert a mesh where the hernia has grown.

This illness has affected her health alot. She goes even for a whole week without excreting. It has been very painful for Diana. The pain from her stomach is unbearable, and sleepless nights have become the order of the day.

Presently, Caroline does casual work to put food on the table. From the little she gets, she divides it to buy food for her family and painkillers for Diana. She tells us that she feels overwhelmed by her daughter’s illness, and has totally no means to pay for the surgery.

The world has dared not spare 12-year old Diana it’s fair share of mockery and stigma. Some say she’s pregnant, while others say she was bewitched. Diana suffers a very low self esteem, and isolates herself at all times.

She stopped going to school due to the condition.

This week we went to Banana, in Kiambu county. We met Belinda Nabwire a 16-year old girl suffering from a growth on her back. She’s raised of a single mom.

They live in a single room with her mom Awino, and her other three siblings. Sometimes they lack food and they’re forced to sleep hungry. Awino has no stable job to cater for the kids and their basic needs. From the little she gets, she divides it to buy some food and painkillers for Belinda. She can’t afford Belinda’s treatment.

The growth started like small itchy rashes and after sometime it grew to bigger pimples and formed a large growth. It is very itchy and painful. The growth removes pus and becomes very smelly. Sometimes she collapses due to the pain from this growth.

It has been traumatizing for this girl and her mother. She puts on a jacket everytime just to hide the growth. Most of the time, Belinda prefers to stay indoors so that people will not see how she looks.

Belinda is in class 7 but she can’t attend school. In school, kids mocked her and called her all sorts of names. She also could not put up with the stigma as other students would isolate her due to the bad odour produced by the growth.

She’s going through a lot; pain from the growth, rejection from other kids and the insults she often gets from people – it’s way too much for her. The adorable girl desires to be a doctor, but her dreams seems to be fading away due to this illness.

Awino has really struggled with her kids. Her husband used to beat her brutally for nothing. She endured domestic violence for very long. The husband is a magnet. A women’s magnet. He had different mistresses in different places and anytime he came home he left nothing for them, not even to pay the kids’ school fees.

Belinda needs to undergo a surgery for the growth to be removed. She is at the verge of depression. Let’s support this young Doctor.
