Meet Daniel Wanjohi, a 36-year old man from Githurai 45, Kimbo. Daniel is suffering from Ascites disease (build up fluid in the Abdomen). The sickness started about 9 years ago. He started complaining of having stomach aches now and then, and was later diagnosed with Ascites. Prior to this diagnosis, his stomach was swellen and filled with fluid.

After going to hospital, he was put on some medicine to remove the fluid but to no avail – it just got worse. The fluid increased and would sometimes even discharge through the nose.

Daniel vomits when he eats anything. He is constantly in pain, and barely get to sleep. David cannot sit upright because of the enlargement on the stomach.

He had a vending job before the illness where he was selling samosas but had to stop. His wife Wahu, has become the bread winner of this family. She does menial jobs like washing others people clothes to earn a living. From her little pay, she offsets their little kid’s school fees and buys medicine for her husband. Not once or twice have they slept hungry.

They haven’t paid rent for 9 months but the landlord has been lenient on them. When they lack food she comes to the rescue. Daniel’s medicines are very expensive. Sometimes Wahu lacks enough money to buy the medicines and poor Daniel is forced to go for days without taking them which is a risk.

Before Daniel quit his daily vending job, he had an incident on his way to work where he was in too much pain that he could not walk. His wife was forced to carry him home. Wahu has been supporting her husband a lot and always reminding him of how much she loves him.

It has been a challenge for Wahu helplessly seeing her husband’s situation and their young daughter. She is their only hope left. Daniel has a pipe and a syringe on the left side of his stomach where the water comes out. Everyday Wahu does the work of emptying the fluid using that pipe. She removes upto two litres from Daniels stomach.

Some people told Wahu that her husband was going to die, but she didn’t give up on him. They told her to leave him and ‘get a life’ but she loves him too much to do that. For her, it’s for better for worse. She has decided to stay beside him.

We are back to follow-up on little Janet from Likoni, Mombasa County. Just a recap: She had an accident and got badly burnt on hot Maandazi (doughnuts) oil. She was in school at around tea break when she went to buy Maandazi for tea as usual. Unfortunately, she fell and hit the basin filled with hot oil which splashed and burnt her head, face and hands. She sustained severe burns.

Beautiful Janet underwent a successful surgery and now she’s recovering from home. We thank God she’s responding well to treatment.

Meet Isabella Mwendwa from Central Imenti, Meru County.

Isabella has been sick for about 4 years. The illness started in 2017 with joint pains, then her stomach started to enlarge. At this point, she didn’t know what the problem was. She felt weak and there was pain all over her body.

After going to hospital, it was said she was suffering from a disease called Ascites, but they couldn’t find the root cause of this illness.

This illness has affected Isabella’s health very much. She constantly experiences joint pains which make her unable to walk well, causes difficulty in breathing, loss of appetite and sleepless nights. From the onset of the illness, she was forced to stay back at home. She was weak and couldn’t do anything for herself.

Her husband took her to hospital twice but he got tired and asked her to leave. He said he didn’t want to live with her again. Isabella’s daughter felt sorry for her mom and she took her in, but after sometime the girl was overwhelmed because she didn’t have a stable job to cater for her family and her mom’s treatment. She took Isabella to her aunt Judith Gakii (sister to Isabella) to live with her.

Isabella feels like she’s a burden living with her sister. All she does is stay indoors from morning till evening just wishing someone could come and rescue her. Sometimes her sister even bathes her when she feels too weak to take a bath by herself.

Some people have isolated her saying that she was bewitched, but Isabella stands with faith that God knows why she’s going through all of this. Judith together with her husband have vowed to stand with her till the end. They never get tired of taking care of Isabella.

We thank God for Baby Esther Muthoni from Kirinyaga County. We have been walking with this girl for about five months now. She had a condition that made her unable to dispose her waste through the normal way.

Doctors were forced to make a hole on the side of her stomach through which she used to pass out waste. It was really painful for the little girl, and she kept crying around the clock.

Through your help, we took her to hospital and she was treated. She underwent several surgeries and now she’s able to dispose her waste normally. This is a testimony and we thank God that everything was successful.

Meet Baraza Juma from Burnt Forest, Uasin Gishu County. Juma is suffering from a growth growing around his ear all the way to his chin. Juma has 4 kids in school.

This growth started in the year 2002 like a tiny boil. When the boil bursted, it produced pus and started to bleed. The growth continued to grow and would soon become very large. The illness disrupted his life almost instantly and he had to depend on support from relatives.

Family members who were hosting Juma at the time reached a point where they could not support him anymore. They were forced to chase him away. Juma sought to live in a tent alongside the road with his family. Luckily, a good Samaritan came along and gave them a place they could stay.

His friends later joined hands and fundraised for him to help him get medical intervention. He also sold everything he had so as to add on to the moneys for surgery.

He went to hospital and underwent a surgery – the growth was finally removed. It was a happy relief which did not last so long. Three weeks after surgery, the growth started to form again. It grew larger than before. Currently, Juma has underwent 8 similar surgeries, but the growth comes back each time.

Juma is a mechanic who had his own garage prior to the illness. He also had a car along with other assets, all of which have been drained by this illness. He sold everything in his multiple attempts to finally ‘get that last surgery’ that would permanently put a stop to the growth. His financial situation went so bad that his kids were sent home due to lack of school fees.

Juma tells us that it’s very painful seeing he is no longer able to provide for his family like he used to. At the moment, the wife does farm work to put a meal on the table. In a day, she is paid an average of KES 200 (about $2 USD) which is barely enough for food.

He is needed to undergo another surgery to remove the root of the growth. Due to this growth, he can’t do anything for himself. He describes that the growth is extremely painful and heavy.

This week we are highlighting Hannah Wairimu from Juja farm. Hannah has a young boy called Ngugi ailing from heart failure.

The boy lives with a life-supporting machine for oxygen. It’s an electric machine that generates the oxygen this boy is using. The machine must be connected to electricity so as to operate, something that has risen electricity costs for Hannah.

Apart from the machine, Hannah also has two gas cylinders that Ngugi uses when there’s no electricity. She refills the gas cylinders with KES 2,000 and KES 1,500, adding up to KES 3,500 (about $3.5 USD) weekly. This amount of money has been a challenge for Hannah to raise seeing she has no sustainable job. She only does menial jobs like washing people’s clothes.

When the son was diagnosed with a heart failure, the dad left them. Hannah struggled with Ngugi asking for money from the family members who offered their support. After taking the son to hospital, doctors said this condition cannot be cured and that he has to live with it. A well wisher offered him that oxygen machine.

We can help Hannah to raise money to manage medical treatment for her son. He uses expensive medicine every day which Hannah is not able to raise on her own.

Today we are highlighting a story from Tharaka Nithi County. Peter Mwenda is suffering from a skin problem yet to be known. Peter has sores all over his body, especially around his face and neck. These sores are very painful and itchy. The sores sometimes bleed and discharge pus, which produces a bad odour around them. This has made people isolate him, avoiding contact with him. Most people in his community fear that this illness can be contagious, which is untrue.

Peter was a bodaboda guy, a very hardworking person, but after he became ill, he was forced to stay at home. The illness made him sell everything he had, including livestock, just to pay for his medical bill.

Peter with his family have tried everything to fundraise for his treatment, but to no avail. It wasn’t enough. He had a biopsy but it resulted in nothing. Pain has been Peter’s daily life. He even once thought of committing suicide.

They sometimes sleep hungry because they have nothing to eat. Their children are sent back home from school because the parents haven’t paid school fees. It’s really painful for this family to see that they’re not financially stable enough to have basic needs.

This family is facing a lot of challenges, but we can change their story from sorrow to happiness. Let’s put a smile on this family’s faces again. Let’s help Peter get his treatment. This week we highlight the story of a young man called Melvin from Kakamega County. Melvin suffers from a swollen leg that started about 7 years ago. It all started as a little thing, then in time it grew worse. He lives with his grandparents, who look after him. Due to this condition, he doesn’t attend school. His only option is to stay at home. He avoids gatherings due to people discriminating against him.

Due to a lack of funds, Melvin is not able to get medical care. The grandma only does shamba work to put food on the table, while the grandpa is not able to do anything seeing as he’s suffering from high blood pressure. It’s really hard for them, and worse, seeing Melvin can also do nothing for himself.

The leg continues to swell each and every time. It has reached a point where the family says it’s better for the leg to be cut. They have lost hope in Melvin’s treatment. The only option left is to cut the swollen leg.

Melvin pleads with Kenyans to please help him get his medical treatment. His dream is to help others when he grows up. Keep on motivating him that all is going to be well.

This week we highlight a story of a young man named Gatimu. Gatimu, who has a vision of becoming an IT guru, has been suffering from illness for about 4 years now.

It was after he had consumed mutura (a popular type of street food) when he started experiencing stomach upsets, which later became worse and his appendix burst. The chemical fluid from the appendix burned his intestines. He underwent the first surgery, but the intestines got infections, and he had to go for a second surgery where the intestines were placed outside.

He uses three colostomy bags a day, which cost Ksh 3,000-6,000. It’s a big challenge for them to afford that amount of money daily. When it blocks, he uses about Ksh 20,000 to unblock it. The mother, who is a single mother, closed her business down and used all her savings and capital for his first surgery.

He was admitted to Kenyatta for 8 months to be treated, but due to a lack of funds, he was forced to stay back at home, ailing.

It is really painful for him and his mom to see that they’re left with nothing to do or anywhere to ask for help. It’s very discouraging for Gatimu because he was not able to continue with his studies. He has studied to form 4 level.

We can help Gatimu get his treatment. The surgery needs about 300K to 400K, which they are unable to raise for themselves.

Meet Zawadi, a young man from Jericho, Nairobi County. He lives with his grandmother, where they have rented a single room. According to their culture, they believe it’s not good to share a room with a male grandchild, but they have no option.

Zawadi suffers from a swollen leg that has also developed wounds. It’s very painful for him. The leg produces a bad odour because of the pus that comes out of the wounds. It has enlarged to the point that it is becoming difficult for him to walk normally. This condition has made people isolate him, with his grandmother citing a bad smell.

Zawadi gets sleepless nights and struggles all night with pain. His grandmother has no stable job and only relies on people to give her house chores and pay her. The money his grandmother gets can’t sustain them, not even their daily food, let alone treatment.

Zawadi’s treatment has become a challenge for them, as they are unable to fundraise for him. They sometimes sleep hungry due to a lack of food. You can imagine a sick person sleeping hungry.

Zawadi’s grandmother has no one to help her; her daughter ran away and left Zawadi when he was a kid. It has been a struggle for his grandmother to look after Zawadi while he’s sick. It’s all the grandmother’s happiness to see their grandchildren well and healthy, but now Jessica feels pain and sorrow seeing her grandson suffering.

This week, Save a Life Community bundled to Kakamega County on a distress call from Maureen. Whenever we receive such a call, we get on the move a mile a minute. Our team wanted to investigate what Maureen was going through, and why she sounded so desperate – we got the answers!

Maureen’s left limb is abnormally swollen for more than a year now. She says it started as a tiny pimple which felt itchy but did not pose any threat. Over time, the pimple developed and enlarged from the ankle upwards to the calf area. She did not have money to seek specialized treatment as she had no job. Together with her hubby (a casual laborer), they were struggling to get their kids through school, so she just used generic drugs.

A few weeks later, Maureen noticed that the wound was only getting worse – spreading further and swelling more. She did not want to become a burden to her already overwhelmed hubby, so she decided to go back home to her mother. Her mother who is aged could only beg for help from the neighbors. They managed to raise some money, went to hospital and got checked for elephantiasis.

The result was negative for elephantiasis. They were stuck again with no clear answer to what their problem was. The little money they had gathered quickly ran out after the tests. Maureen and her mother went back home, desperate.

This is the current situation.

In our philosophy since 2013, we believe that everyone can always do something to help somebody in need. The idea of SEE AND DO. That’s why we have started a medical fundraising campaign for Maureen. She deserves a chance at life, just like the rest of us. We are raising money to get her to specialized treatment where she will be properly diagnosed and treated.

This is Nanyu – a lovely and jovial girl. She is from Nanyuki, Laikipia County, Kenya.

Nanyu has a large tumor on the right side of her skull. She has been sick for 3 years, before Save a Life got to her.

The year is 2017: 32-year old Enock leaves home for work with his 2 friends. They were fishing on a boat before seeing the unforeseen.

The 3 young men got attacked by a hippopotamus (hippo) and were pulled into the water one by one. His 2 friends were killed instantly, leaving him as the sole survivor but with a price to pay – his legs. The hippo aggressively amputated both of his legs with it’s sharp giant teeth.

Fast-forward: Four years later Enock has not been able to get treatment due to lack of funds. The wounds are rotting. He needs wound care management, prosthetic surgery and a set of prosthetic legs.

His wife (Pauline) who has been very supportive works at a local groceries shop and cleans people’s homes to put a meal on the table.

Pauline narrates that she often gets advised to leave the crippled man and catch fresh new love from a man who is not a liability. She does everything for Enock from cleaning to dressing him. They have two lovely kids.

A sad story from Mombasa County. Meet Janet, a 9-year old girl. She is with her mother (Martha), who narrates to us of one fateful day when it all happened.

It was any other day for Janet at school learning with other kids as normal. During break-out around 10:00AM, Janet decided to go and buy mandazi (doughnuts) at nearby shops. Her short journey to the shops was a turning point for her life. She fell on hot boiling cooking oil which was being used to cook the mandazi.

Janet got badly burnt on her head, arms, thighs and legs. The accident left her with wounds all over her body. She was rushed to hospital but only managed to have basic first aid performed.

Due to lack of money, she has not been able to get rightful treatment since then. Martha is a single mom as Janet’s dad quickly got himself out of the picture after the accident (deadbeat alert).

Janet cannot attend school, she stays at home all day nursing her painful injuries. Martha tells us that currently, they have rent arrears for a number of months. It’s a sad situation here.

This week, we are highlighting a story of Dorothy from Kirinyaga County who suffers from a rare skin disease called Epidermolysis Bullosa. She has been through this for twenty-six years.

Dorothy has wounds all over her body. She has been isolated and people have been very mean to her saying that she smells. Dorothy has a baby but she can’t breastfeed due to the open wounds on her body.

Save a Life covered her story a while ago and we got her a doctor in UpperHill where we’ve been taking her for clinic. We have also been helping with her two-day-interval wound care dressing and buying milk for her baby. The condition can only be managed not entirely cured.

At the moment, the money got depleted and Dorothy needs to resume treatment. We promised to walk with her this journey and we are not turning back. For this condition, symptoms reoccur when you cease treatment. She needs to be on treatment continually to control the symptoms.

Dorothy tells us that she feels very worthless especially when people tell her she is smelling. She sometimes asks God questions for what she is going through.

When you thought you have heard it all, we bring you a story of someone who threw acid on an innocent girl. Save a Life K24 went to Kakamega County on a distress call from Rose Shivuli. The mother and caregiver of six narrates to us about a fateful evening.

They were having dinner at eight in the night when her daughter, Faith said she wanted to visit the loo outside. Immediately she opened the door, a stranger threw acid on her which also splashed on the younger kids and the mother.

Faith got burnt instantly and they did not have a chance to see who had done the act. They were rushed to a local hospital by neighbours but the acid had already caused significant damage for an ordinary burn.

Elizabeth is a strong woman. Her story is one that depicts the love of a mother. One day while she was doing laundry in her bathroom, she tripped and fell causing a fracture on her hip joint and a dislocated disc instantly.

She was taken to hospital, had a successful hip replacement, then got back home after surgery to continue recovering. Just when she had started getting better, her son Isaac got very ill. Elizabeth was forced to get up and fend for her son, something her doctors had not allowed yet. Unfortunately, her hip replacement failed as a result and she was stuck again on a wheelchair.

Isaac needed a surgery. This amazing mother sacrificed again to let her son get through his surgery first before she could think of her own second surgery. At the moment, Isaac is doing well but his mother is still on a wheelchair. Despite her condition, Elizabeth has also offered to stay with her niece’s child (Baby Grace) who Save a Life highlighted a while ago. Baby Grace’s mother is currently bedridden.

William Otieno is suffering from a growth on his face. As a young man full of dreams, the growth is pulling him back. He feels like giving up on life. He says that the growth started as a tooth problem around the year 2017, and has progressively become worse.

William tells us it’s very painful for him because he can’t work or do anything for himself. He has tried to look for jobs to sustain himself but people refuse to offer him a job in his condition.

David Muriithi has a growth on his face. The growth produces bad smell due to bacteria, which has caused people to isolate him. He is depressed and has even tried to commit suicide severally. He tells us that he feels rejected and worthless in life.

Anifa Akwera, a 12 year old girl. She lives with her grandmother, Esther, who tells us that Anifa’s mother set on heels and left her ill daughter. Anifa has a growth on her face. It started when she was at the age of 5. This growth has caused hopelessless and despair in the family. Anifa struggles to breath due to the blockage of her nasal area by the growth protrusion. Now she uses her mouth to breath. Pain has been Anifa’s daily norm.

This young girl Anifa has a dream of becoming a doctor, the grandmother does all she can to see her well including doing casual labor, in her old age. It is sad for her grandmother seeing she’s left with nothing to do. They sometimes sleep hungry due to lack of food.

It is every parent’s joy to see their kids with good health, but in this case Anifa’s grandmother is full of sadness and desperation, seeing how Anifa suffers and nothing she can do about it. They went to various hospitals to no avail of getting treatment since they did not have funds.
