Salim Arakwem is 15 years old. He lives in a children’s rescue center called Kids’ Dream in Njiru. His story is a bitter one.

Salim was just any other happy kid when one day, his parents came home drunk and started fighting. There was hot water boiling close to the ‘battlefield’, which one of the fighters mistakenly kicked. The hot water poured on innocent Salim burning him fatally.

His rescuers (Kids Dream) have done an incredible job in raising Salim, providing him with a family setting and basic needs but the challenge has been getting money for Salim to undergo plastic surgery. His condition is worsening as one of his eyes has started to discharge pus which puts him at a risk of blindness.

Salim as a teenager, has unsolved puzzles of how his life will be. He was brought to the children’s home by a good samaritan. Everyday when it’s time for school he can’t bear the thought of him going to school this way. Salim feels isolated everytime he is around people. He has very low self esteem.

Save a Life KTN show goes to Kakamega. We are here to help Floize (Mama Mboone). The mother of three kids narrates to us how her own family has described her as cursed. She is seen as an outcast in her family.

Floize gave birth to the firstborn who had a problem with one eye, then she gave birth to the secondborn who is currently blind, and the lastborn has started to develop eye problems.

Pain and rejection is what she experiences daily. People insult her saying she’s cursed for bearing blind kids. Despite her hardwork to provide for the kids, her effort is pulled down and demoralized.

Floize has tried to take the kids to various hospitals but the challenge has been lack of finances to pay medical bills. She says the amount needed for their treatment is too high she just can’t afford the treatment.

A plate of food is what she can afford but this is not enough for her kids’ well-being. They need treatment to regain back their normal eyesight. She’s worried about their future.

Things can change for the better for Floize if her kids get well. All she needs is someone to hold her hand. Let’s support and bring happiness to this family. Be that person who can change the sadness and pain in this family to bring joy and relief.

Maureen Waitherero is 24 years old. She suffers from a skin disease which started as goosepumps, as she puts it. Maureen tells us that she admires street kids when she comes across them because they have good skin.

The cheerful young lady says she feels a lesser woman because of her skin appearance. She stays indoors to avoid people staring at her. It has reached to a point where she wishes death on herself. Maureen tells us she feels like she’s been a burden to her loving mother for long enough.

Maureen’s mother narrates how nightfall is not nightfall for them. Maureen hardly sleeps during the night, she is constantly scratching herself out of itch. The pain becomes unbearable after scratching. Maureen’s mother can only watch helplessly throughout the night, everyday. She has raised her as a single mother.

Baby Dunda – A silent kid in the arms of his mother, not the usual silence. It’s a case of illness. The story is covered in Ruiru, Kiambu at the humble home of Baby Dunda. The baby’s head is unbelievably swollen and he sure is not okay. We are told by the mom that they had pulled strings so hard to get funds for treatment, and they did. But the shunt inserted in Baby Dunda’s head to drain out water failed!

Since the first failed surgery, it’s been two weeks and they can see no light at the end of the tunnel. The father of the kid is desperate. His life turned from that of a happy man celebrating his new bundle of joy, to that of misery.

Baby Karimi was born with a rare deformity of his brain forming outside the skull. The worsening problem has affected his eyes but as scary as this sounds, he can be saved through a brain surgery.

The constant thing in this household is cries. Baby Karimi is in utter pain and discomfort. The poor boy risks losing his vision if the condition is not intervened. Living in informal settlement, food is a struggle for 25-year old mother to Baby Karimi. She is depressed and suicidal.

This story is from a place called Satellite in Kawangware, Nairobi. We highlight 26-year old David Otieno’s desperate case. The jovial man suffers a problem with his left leg which he says doctors told him is as a result of water in the leg. The leg is so swollen that he can hardly walk, all he does is hobble around with crutches. It has been the same script since 2015 day in day out.

This day, we meet David with his friend and neighbour Washington, who tells us he also has a blood clot in his leg. The two gentlemen (David and Washington) like to meet up at this spot and encourage each other in their helpless situation. David narrates that the cost of surgery was KES 300,000 in 2015 when he was diagnosed but has shot up to KES 700,000 now.

We head to Ngomongo in Roysambu Constituency to meet Francis Wafula. A man who has known pain for a good ten years. He has a growth on his face, which he says started as a small pimple and continues to get worse by the day. The father of four has been living from hand to mouth, without any chance to seek medical treatment. He struggles to take care of his kids, who are all school-going.

Francis tells us that the open wounds on his face discharge pus and blood. He wakes up on his own blood in his beddings every day. Francis is pleading with people of good-will and anyone who hears his cry to rescue him from this ailment. He hopes to get financial support for going to hospital and getting the necessary tests done on him.

2020 was a dark year!…

Witnessing a pandemic, that affected the entire globe. The world was threatened and our systems pushed to the edge! At the same time, thousands of people were exposed to the pangs of hunger, poverty, and illness.

Embu fundraising campaign follow up.

After the funeral for the late Mr. Gachoki, we went back to the family as promised and empowered them with the money we had fund-raised from their story, also from UTV.

This will help them recover their assets (which had been sold seeking money for medical treatment) and enable Mr. Stephen (Late Mr. Gachoki’s brother) to start a business. More, the mother who was also ill will be taken to hospital.

Tell you what, the mood was lovely! Smiles were stretching from ear to ear, sadness crunched like popcorns and emotions exchanged like invisible passes.

All thanks to YOU lovely people, we made this family happy. Another story to remind us that when we come together, there is nothing that can stop us! Cheers to all who donated, and even those who just helped us spread the message online.

We had just received a call to help this desperate family when we rushed down to Embu. It was a case of a three-year illness with no means to get treatment whatsoever. The father to Mr. Gachoki (now deceased), told us that he had tried all he could including selling all his livestock to try and get his son medical assistance, without success.

The deceased was long-suffering so we decided to start a campaign shoot right away. Before concluding the shoot, Joseph decided to pray for the sick man, asking God to fulfill His will. Just after the prayer, Mr. Gachoki is pronounced dead!

His brother who has been his support system, could not hold his tears. The family transitioned quickly from desperation to mourning.

We are calling for your support to empower this family. After all, it’s the least we can do now that Mr. Gachoki is no more. Please donate and make a change in the lives of these wonderful people.
